What is VoIP and how does it work?

Discover the basics of VoIP and find out how the technology transforms voice calls into digital data.

    What is VoIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows you to make telephone calls over an Internet connection rather than over a conventional telephone network. VoIP converts your voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet and converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number.

    How does VOIP work?

Analog phone signals need to be converted into digital signals to be transferred over the internet.

Ordinary Phone — ATA — Ethernet — Router — Internet — VOIP Service Provider

    VOIP using an IP Phone:

IP Phone — Ethernet — Router — Internet — VOIP Service Provider
