What speed connection do I need to use a VoIP service?

Learn about the speed requirements for setting up a VoIP service and get tips on how to ensure reliable sound quality.

The number of concurrent calls is the number of calls made at the same time which will dictate the connection speed you require. Due to various audio codecs that can be used by VoIP phones the bandwidth usage can vary however generally per concurrent call 100 Kilo Bytes Per Second (Kbps) of upload and 100Kbps of download are required as a minimum. However a minimum upload and download of 5 Mbps+ is recommended.

    Example:

Number of Concurrent Calls Minimum Required Bandwidth Recommended Speed and Connection
1 100 Kbps Upload and Download 5 Mbps+ Upload and Download - DSL or better
10 1 Mbps Upload and Download 5 Mbps+ Upload and Download - DSL or better
50 5 Mbps Upload and Download 20 Mbps+ Upload and Download - FTTC or better
100 10 Mbps Upload and Download 30 Mbps+ Upload and Download - FTTC or better
500 50 Mbps Upload and Download 200 Mbps+ Upload and Download - FTTP or better
